Cassini's Historical Map series will cover the whole of England and Wales (old maps of Scotland are planned for a later date). It is based on Ordnance Survey's one inch to the mile (Old Series) maps, published between 1805 and 1874. This was the first accurate national survey and records a time of momentous transition from an agrarian to an industrialised society.
The originals have been combined, re-scaled and re-projected exactly to match Ordnance Survey's modern-day Landrangers®. They have the same map identification number and the same British National Grid references. This enables direct comparison of the past and present in a way not possible with maps of different specifications. They are the same size as the Landrangers® when open or folded and have a similar laminated colour cover.
