Cumbria Way
Inspired by the rebirth of Cumbria as a county in 1974, the Cumbria Way is a 72-mile walk through the heart of the Lake District, commencing at Ulverston in the south and finishing at Carlisle in the north. All but the first five miles and the final stage north of Caldbeck falls within the boundary of the Lake District National Park. For the most part the Cumbria Way remains on lower ground, crossing hills only twice in its entire length. The first is essential, as it negotiates the central watershed by way of the Stake Pass: this stage reveals the finest mountain scenery. Later, the Way pays belated respect to the hills by finally embracing the 2000ft contour on High Pike, northern outpost of the Lakeland Fells: even then, there is an easier alternative route for this part. The relatively easy walking and modest length of the Way mean that anyone taking a week off to walk it will find themselves with a day or two to spare. For this reason each stage features an optional fellwalk, which you might enjoy by staying an extra night at some point and savouring a day on the hills without having your full rucksack with you.

Short Walks - Isle of Wight
20 easy-to-follow walks for the whole family. The routes range from 1½ to 5½ miles in length. Ordnance Survey mapping throughout. Points of interest for children, as well as refreshment stops, public facilities and transport. With its wide-open river estuaries, dramatic cliffs and rolling chalk downland, the Isle of Wight offers some of Britain's most varied scenery. Away from the bustling seaside resorts, you'll find pretty lanes and thatched villages waiting to welcome you - and, it's said, there's a pub for almost every square mile on the island. Over 500 miles of carefully maintained footpaths offer plenty of scope to explore the island's unique attractions. The guide features historic buildings like the remarkable 14th-century lighthouse near Chale, Bembridge windmill and the town hall at Newtown, which dates from the days of England's infamous rotten boroughs.
