Favourite Walks in Devon

In this neat volume of circular walks in Devon, Simone Stanbrook-Byrne and James Clancy have persuaded some of the county’s most respected walkers and authors to divulge secrets of their favourite routes. A quick scan of the contents gives a sense of the variation of terrain covered – readers are invited to follow paths through the rolling Blackdown Hills, along the rugged North Devon coast, across wildest Dartmoor and beside the curling River Dart.

In each of these chapters it is the connection to, and familiarity with, a well-trodden path that shines through: from Adam Hart-Davis’ carefully observed line drawings of structures around the River Erme, to Simon Dell’s informed eye spotting vermin traps and pillow mounds underfoot (which otherwise might have passed unnoticed).

For me it is the writer’s familiarity with a route – through the years or across the seasons – that marks this book as special. I learn where rivers rage in winter, where kingcups glow in summer and where starlings wheel in autumn skies.

There is drama too in the scenery encountered: I can feel the wind buffeting as an astonishing view at Morte Point is revealed, and the thrill of stumbling across an ancient stone row on Dartmoor.

But what’s the use of a book of walks if it a) doesn’t fit in your pocket, b) give very clear directions and a readable map, c) list where to get a cup of tea? This book does all this exceptionally well, and it identifies the length and level of the walks, places of interest, loos, public transport and places to stay.
